How Do I Know What Size My Septic Tank Is?

There are two ways to determined the size of your septic tank.

Find records left by the original tank installer, a previous septic cleaning service that pumped the tank, or the previous owner. You can also contact your county’s health department or septic/sewage department and request the records for your septic system.
Look inside your home for clues. The size of the septic tank often depends on the number of bedrooms in the home and the home’s square footage.
• 1-2 bedrooms = 750 gallons
• 3 bedrooms = 1,000 gallons
• 4 bedrooms = 1,250 gallons
• 5 bedrooms = 1,500 gallons

A weekend Porta-John rental is Friday-Sunday and is picked up on Monday.

About Us

Kevin and Sue Burns - Owners / Operators

In 1978, Kevin Burns began working at Coleman Community Schools. Around 1983, he saw the need and opportunity for septic tank pumping services in the area and proceeded to buy his first pumping truck in 1983.

From 1983 until 1989, he was working at the school full time, while also farming and pumping tanks. His days started early at 6:00 AM and went late into the night to around 11:00 PM.

Eventually, his hard work and determination allowed him to quit his job at the school and dedicate all his time to pumping septic tanks. In time, he incorporated Porta-Johns into the business by purchasing just 4 of them to start.

Today, Kevin Burns Septic & Porta-Johns, has 190 Porta-Johns, 2 pumping trucks and 2 Porta-John trucks.

Kevin has always been a hard worker and has gone the extra mile for all his customers and still does to this day.

Septic Maintenance

Where does my sewage go after you pump it?

It is typically applied to farmland in the summer. In the winter, when the ground is frozen, the sewage is taken to the city wastewater treatment plant.

How often should my septic tank be pumped?

We recommend that a typical 1000 gallon tank, in a home with three to four people, be pumped every two to three years. Service frequency varies depending on number of people and size of tank. Please see our frequency chart for more information.

How do I know when my septic tank needs to be pumped?

Common signs that your tank needs maintenance are: Gurgling sounds from drains, toilets backing up, slow toilet flushing, or shower and washing machine doesn't drain. If you have smelly water seeping up through your lawn it's a sign that your septic field is damaged beyond repair. It could indicate that you need a new septic field.

What has to be done to access my septic tank and will my lawn be damaged?

During the process of septic maintenance, there is a necessary procedure of removing sod and soil to gain access to the septic tank. The sod and soil will be carefully removed and placed on tarps protecting the rest of the lawn. When finished, all the soil and sod will be replaced to their original locations.

I live outside of your service area (Midland County). Will you service my septic tank?

We can provide our services outside Midland County but cost will be a factor. Please call us in this situation.

Will you need to drive on my lawn?

When performing septic services, we will avoid driving on the customer's lawn at all costs. We pride ourselves in being as non-invasive as possible. Once we're finished we do our best to make it look like we were never there in the first place.

Are you available during holidays, weekends, or in emergency situations?

We like being there for our customers when they need us. We realize that emergencies and required maintenance can happen at inopportune times. Kevin Burns Septic will do its absolute best to be there when you need us most. Additionally, there is no extra charge for these occasions.

How long have you been in the business?

Since 1982, Kevin Burns Septic has been servicing Midland County and the surrounding areas. Thank you to all our loyal customers!

Do you install septic fields and tanks?

No, but we work closely with several qualified and experienced excavators in the area. Please call us so we can make the proper recommendation for your needs.

Porta-John Rental

Do you provide Porta-Johns to commercial job sites?

Yes, we provide many commercial businesses with Porta-Johns. Please call us to determine what will best fit your business needs!

Will you deliver a Porta-John to my home?

Yes, we provide Porta-John rentals for all sorts of recreational needs. Whether you have an event, or construction project, we will gladly provide one to you. If your location isn't within our reach then we'll recommend someone in your area.

How often will my Porta-John be cleaned?

For monthly rentals, Porta-Johns are cleaned during the week. If an additional cleaning is requested then there is a charge for it. For a weekend rental, cleaning is not scheduled unless requested. If a weekend rental cleaning is requested then there is a charge for it also.
